Hello there! I'm Terry Coy, an Individual, Marriage, and Family Therapist. For many this process and seeing so many names of therapy or mental health names can be overwhelming. With this in mind, I would like to introduce myself in what I would call session zero. No fees, get to know me a little bit, and hopefully we get a head start on building trust and comfort.
First, congratulations on making it this far. Already, although it may not seem like much, you have taken a HUGE step toward improving your life. Therapy, because of myths and cultural stigmas, may seem either scary or useless. What is it really? Starting a conversation with someone who will be kind, empathetic, non-judgmental, and specifically trained in ways to lessen anxiety and ease depression. In my instance, that includes a Bachelors degree in sociology, a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, 16 years of my own marriage, and parenting 3 kids. I have been working in mental health since 2005. Wow, that seems like a really big number when I share it.
On a personal note, I have quite a few hobbies. I love camping and the outdoors, hiking, and hopefully soon that includes some mountain climbing. I also coach several sports with my kids and practice my favorite art, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, whenever I can. I also am very involved in my community through our schools, church, and a men's group.
I utilize these experiences, degrees, life, and sometimes even my faith to serve individuals and families.
