I am a licensed clinical psychologist who has been treating clients for more than 35 years. I am currently in private practice and I continue to write and publish. My focus as a psychotherapist is to combine the use of empathy with cognitive behavioral techniques. I believe that the giving and receiving of empathy causes positive brain changes and when trust is established between therapist and client empathy allows for deeper understanding while reaching practical solutions to increase resilience and produce happiness. I am on the faculty of The International Association of Wellness Practitioners, and is a Global Presence Ambassador, Parenting 2.0. I have been on the faculty of Harvard Medical School for several years, lecturer for the American Cancer Society, Chief Psychologist at MetroWest Medical Center, and director of the MetroWest Counseling Center and of the Alternative Medicine division of MetroWest Wellness Center in Framingham, Massachusetts. I was previously the Chief Medical Officer of Soundmindz.org a popular mental health site. I have spent my entire career helping people reduce their prejudices toward themselves and others, while increasing their understanding of the enormous benefits of diversity and the transformative power of empathic interpersonal relationships. I believe every human being has the capacity to grow and uncover the goodness that lies within each spiritual being. Teasing out the hidden potential of others by uncovering the false ideas many of us carry into adulthood about ourselves and others is the prime focus of his personal self-help book on diversity. I explain in detail how the interconnections of humankind allow those of different religions, different political persuasions and different cultures to discover the commonalities among us that allow us to thrive in union, rather than continue in our current societal climate that fosters group think, divisiveness and hatred. In addition to treating patients, I have lectured at Harvard Health Services, Boston College Counseling Center, the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, The Revelry Group as well as being a consultant to several major corporations in the Boston area. I have appeared on CNN, CNNfn, Fox News Boston, Comcast TV, New England Cable News, Good Morning America, The O'Reilly Report, and other shows. I have been a weekly radio guest on Your Healthy Family on Sirius Satellite Radio and Holistic Health Today, and has been interviewed on The People's Pharmacy, The Gary Null Show, and more than two dozen other radio programs airing on NPR, XM Radio, and numerous AM and FM stations. I am the author America Reunited: A Relational Solution to Bridging the Political, Social and Personal Chasm Dividing our Nation, The Triumph of Diversity: Rejoice In and Benefit from the Interconnectedness of Human Kind (Open Books, 2020), The Soulful Leader: Success with Authenticity, Integrity and Empathy (Open Books, 2019),The Stress Solution: How Using Empathy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy decreases Anxiety and increases Resilience (New World Library, 2016), The Curse of the Capable: The Hidden Challenges to a Balanced, Healthy, High Achieving Life (Wiley, 2010), Performance Addiction: The Dangerous New Syndrome and How to Stop It from Ruining Your Life (Wiley 2004) and The Power of Empathy: A Practical Guide to Creating Intimacy, Self-Understanding, and Lasting Love (Dutton 2000), which is now published in 7 languages. My first book, Treatment of Abuse and Addiction, A Holistic Approach (Jason Aronson, 1997) was selected as Book of the Month by The Psychotherapy Book News. I am also the coauthor of Beyond the Influence: Understanding and Defeating Alcoholism (Bantam 2000). I live in a suburb of Boston with my wife of 40 years. I am a devout Peloton rider, exercise enthusiast and advocate for plant-based eating. I have always viewed self-care and the capacity for empathy as the keys to personal and professional success. I am a student of the major religions, always trying to increase my understanding of in-depth spiritual awakening. My greatest joy is spending summer days in Southern Maine with my wife, daughter’s, son-in-law’s and beautiful grandchildren Ariana and Carmela.
