I completed a Master of Science degree from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. I began my counseling practice upon graduation and worked for Sagestone Counseling in Emerald Isle, NC from 2017 until relocating to Wilmington, NC in 2020. I opened my counseling practice Wilmington, NC In June of 2021 and I see a variety of clients including those with substance use disorder, trauma, PTSD, couples as well as children. As someone in long term recovery, I have a special interest in substance use disorder, trauma, and PTSD. I am a very person centered therapist which means I want to work on what you the client wants to work on. I don't have a set formula for counseling and tailor my approach on what I think works best for the client.

I believe the client-therapist relationship is primarily a collaboration. I want to help you figure out your strengths-- ones that can enable you to overcome or manage the problems you are facing. I also believe it's important that I use evidence-based approaches in our work together. Why recreate the wheel? I have the more extensive training of a PhD and more than 20 years of experience counseling individual adults, couples, and older teens. Over the years, I've helped medical patients (those confronted with cancer, chronic pain and/or chronic illnesses). I've helped clients navigate marital or family conflict, divorce, the loss of a parent, child or partner, social isolation, and biogenetic challenges such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depression, and bipolar disorder. Offering support and expertise, I can help you find your way forward.

My name is Jim Wells. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. I am also a Registered Play Therapist and certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I have over 30 years experience and specialize in helping parents connect better with their children and with each other. I am a systemic therapist and treat the family as a whole unit. We all have different needs and when families do not understand each other's needs, miscommunication can cause division. I strive to understand what each person needs so that families can work on connecting in more meaningful ways. It is often helpful to uncover trauma and resolve it so that it doesn't continue to affect your present. We often live according to the script we were given. Bringing the unconscious to the present can help you determine how you want to live your life and re-write your script. I look forward to getting to know you.
